The talebehind the plate

The story of two founders brought together by a shared love of food and story telling

I scaled my first six-figure consulting business while at Harvard, then spent an embarrassing amount of that money on overpriced food delivery. Somehow, despite having thousands of options at my fingertips, deciding what to eat still felt impossible. That frustration became the starting point for PlateTale, an AI-powered model designed to understand your unique taste profile, almost like an MBTI for food. My goal is simple: to make choosing what to eat easier, help people discover what they genuinely enjoy together, and give everyone a little more time for the things they love. These days, I’m teaching AI that “comfort food” means something different to everyone.

The best meal I've ever had wasn't the most refined one. It was the one that understood the day I'd had.

Veronica Sokoloff

Co-Founder & Head of Product

A Colombian computer science student at the University of Chicago and the founder of PlateTale. Obsessed with one small, universal problem: deciding what to eat is unreasonably hard — endless options, endless scrolling, and we still end up with the same thing we had last week. Taste is relatively stable but context is not, and nobody has really mapped food the way we've mapped music or film. That's what she's building toward: a map of taste and context that makes the choice feel obvious.

Everyone has a food story. Most of it never fits in a search box — that's the part we wanted to build for.

Our Story

Why we started PlateTale.

We started PlateTale because choosing what to eat was something we both struggled with. We could spend far too much time thinking about what sounded good, only to end up more indecisive than when we started.

What if there were something that could actually get to know your tastes and understand what you might want in that moment? Something you could turn to when you did not feel like thinking about what to eat and just wanted to be told, “This is the one.”

That idea became PlateTale. We wanted to create a more personal way to discover food, one that makes the decision easier while still leaving room for the excitement of discovering something new.

Your food story is personal. We built PlateTale to understand it.
